And this wraps up the blogging of my Egypt and Jordan adventure.
Distance flown to get from Montreal to Egypt:......... 8800 km
Distance travelled by train:............................... 1500 km
Distance travelled by cruise ship:......................... 200 km
Distance travelled by ferry:................................. 70 km
Distance travelled by public bus:.......................... 850 km
(including at least half a dozen military stops, and one bag search before crossing under the Suez canal)
Distance travelled by private bus:........................ 1200 km
(including only one military stop, and no problem crossing under the Suez)
Distance travelled by donkey:................................ 8 km
Distance travelled by camel:.................................. 4 km
Distance travelled in the front seat of a taxi with no functioning seatbelts: Far too much to admit to...
Lowest point I've ever been to:.... Dead Sea (420 m below sea level)
Furthest South I've ever been:..... Abu Simbel, Egypt (22.37 deg N)
Furthest East I've ever been:..... Qusayr Amra, Jordan (36.58 deg E)
Most interesting juxtaposition of stats from the trip: It seems that Khufu had himself a giant pyramid built (the Great Pyramid of Giza... built from about 2.3 million stones, each averaging between 2.5 and 15 tons... reaching a height of 140 m, the tallest man-made structure on Earth for over 3800 years) to compensate for his tiny statue (the only positively identified statue of the pharaoh is a meager 7.6 cm tall).
Thanks for reading along!
